Rewards: Chests, Escrow & Styx Shards

Kill the dungeon boss and the run pays out. Every player is offered three chestsTempered, Gilded and Opulent — and you pick exactly one. You pay a cash cost for the chest you open, and that price reflects what actually rolled inside.

The three chests

Chest Rune ceiling The gist
Tempered Common / Uncommon Cheap, safe filler — basic runes only
Gilded up to Epic Better runes, plus the occasional socket expander
Opulent Uncommon floor, up to Mythic The one chest that can hold the rarest pulls

Opulent is where the chase lives — it's the only chest that can carry the kinds of prizes worth running for, with everything else floored at Uncommon. The other two are the safer, cheaper picks. What exactly waits inside is best discovered at the moment you open it.

Higher chests roll the tier+1 rune table, but the dungeon tier still drives the underlying odds — a low-tier run can't hand you a high rarity no matter which chest you open. Mythic runes are T7-only.

Runes drop sealed as a mystery item. You open them later to reveal the effect — see Runes and Socketing & Upgrading Runes.

Styx Shards

Opening any chest also grants Styx Shards, the dungeon currency, scaled by the chest's tier. Spend them at the Wandsmith.

Socket Expanders

Chests can drop Tiered Rune Socket Expanders — Chainmail, Gold, Iron, Diamond and Netherite. Each adds a socket to gear of its tier or below, so a Netherite expander works on anything while a Chainmail one is limited to the lowest tier. See socketing for how sockets work.

Escrow — don't lose a chest

If you close the chest GUI without picking, or you simply have no room, the offer isn't lost — it's sent to your Escrow to claim later with /escrow. You're warned when your escrow is getting close to full.

Escrow is a paid Season Pass perk:

  • Claiming paid level 1 grants your first 10 slots.
  • Slots grow to 100 across the paid track.
  • Non-holders get 0 slots — without the pass, an unclaimed chest is gone.

Fortune nodes

The Dungeon Skill Tree's Fortune nodes bend chest payouts in your favour. They can discount the chest cost, duplicate loot, upgrade a rune's rarity, or add a bonus rune — worth investing in if you run dungeons often.

The rarest finds

A handful of relics sit at the very top of Tartarus — the sort of thing players trade stories about long before they ever see one. They're real, they're out there, and they're left for the worthy to uncover. No spoilers here.
