Runes are socketable modifiers you slot into your gear — the Season 2 augment that comes out of the Dungeons of Tartarus. Each one bends a stat or grants a build-around effect, and they sit alongside enchants on the same item, much like the server's other special items.
The six categories
A rune fits one kind of gear, and only matching gear:
| Category | Fits |
|---|---|
| Sword | swords |
| Axe | axes |
| Bow | bows |
| Wand | wands |
| Armor | any of your four armor pieces (helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots) |
| Pickaxe | your pickaxe |
A Sword rune never goes in an axe, an Armor rune fits any armor slot, and so on. See Socketing & Upgrading Runes for how to actually attach one.
Rarity tiers
Runes come in six rarities, and rarity drives how strong the effect is — the higher the tier, the bigger the number:
Common → Uncommon → Rare → Epic → Legendary → Mythic
The rarest runes only drop from the deepest dungeons, and Legendaries and Mythics carry the chase, build-around effects.
Doubled in dungeons
Every rune is global — its effect works anywhere on the server, the moment it's socketed. But step inside a dungeon and the numeric effect is doubled. The one exception is Pickaxe runes: there's no mining in dungeons, so they never double.
Sealed drops
Runes drop from dungeon chests sealed. Only the rarity is decided when it falls — the concrete effect and its apply-chance are still hidden. Right-click a sealed rune to open it and reveal what's inside. See Rewards: Chests, Escrow & Styx Shards for where dungeon loot comes from.
Named effects
Every rune effect carries a thematic suffix that names it, so the name tells you what it does:
- of Vampirism — lifesteal
- of the Titan — increased damage to bosses
- of Resonance — the Mythic rune that makes the other runes on that item more effective
Effects span three broad families:
- Weapon offence — damage, crit, lifesteal, ailments, area-of-effect.
- Armor defence — less damage taken, max HP, thorns, regen, dodge (Evade).
- Pickaxe utility — mining XP, sell value, double drops, shard chance.
Legendary and Mythic runes push into chase territory: guaranteed crits, on-kill explosions, cheat-death, knockback immunity — the kind of effect you build a setup around.
The /runes catalog
There's a cluster-wide /runes catalog of every rune that exists. A rune stays masked as ??? until someone sockets it for the first time — that first socket discovers it and reveals its full entry for everyone. Until then, you only see the category and rarity, not the effect.
