Boss Fight Mechanics

Every boss in the underworld plays by the same shared rules, no matter which one you've summoned. This page covers the arena, scaling, regen, and the protections that stop you from cheesing a fight — read it once and it applies to Lamia, Echidna, Thanatos, and Hephaestus alike. Each is a distinct horror with its own arsenal — what they actually do is best discovered with a weapon in hand.

Parties and arenas

Boss fights are built for groups. Form one with /party, then have the summoner open the portal — only the summoner and their party can see or enter it. Each group drops into its own private arena, so you're never sharing a fight with strangers, and several parties can battle the same boss at once whenever arenas are free.

Bringing more people isn't a free win. Bosses scale to your group: more fighters means more total HP to chew through, so a bigger party brings more hands for the mechanics rather than melting the boss in seconds. See Summoning a Boss for how portals open, and Gangs if you're rolling with your crew.

Dying, leaving, and time limits

  • Death never costs you anything. Go down in a boss arena and you keep your full inventory and XP, then respawn at the hub. The catch: you can't rejoin that fight.
  • Leaving is final too. /boss leave pulls you out early with no re-entry. If your whole party goes down, the fight ends.
  • Fights don't last forever. A drawn-out fight ends automatically after about 20 minutes.

The in-game /boss Help book still says 30 minutes — that text is stale. The real cap is 20.

Combat regen — keep the pressure on

Bosses now heal when you stop hitting them. If a boss goes 10 seconds without taking damage, it starts regenerating 1% of its max HP every second until you re-engage. The fix is simple: keep dealing damage and the regen never kicks in.

Regen is paused while a boss is invulnerable during one of its phases — so you're not punished for waiting out a moment you can't damage through.

No slows, no stun-locks

Two old crutches are gone:

  • Bosses are immune to Slowness. Frostblade, the wand beam's chill, thrown potions — any Slowness source slides right off. You can't pin a boss in place.
  • Bosses can't be stun-locked. Spamming a fast bow or wand no longer flinch-pauses any boss — every one of them chases you down regardless of your fire rate.

Using wands and bows

Ranged weapons are fully viable here. Ancient wands and bows damage every boss at their full rapid-fire rate — there's no PvE penalty for going ranged, so a glass-cannon build is a legitimate way to fight a boss. (For how ranged and melee differ in player fights, see PvP Basics.)

When you're ready to chase rewards, head to Boss Loot & Drop Announcements. The chase pool runs deep — the rarest prizes of Tartarus are left for the worthy to uncover for themselves.

Version history

v2.0.0

  • Bosses now slowly regenerate when left alone — 10 seconds without taking damage heals 1% of max HP per second, paused during invulnerable phases.
  • Bosses can no longer be slowed — all Slowness sources are ignored.
  • Bosses can no longer be stun-locked by rapid fire — Thanatos and Hephaestus stop flinch-pausing and now chase continuously like the other two.
  • Ancient wands and bows now damage every boss at their full rapid-fire rate.
