Mining Shards
Mining shards are a reward stream you build up just by breaking blocks. Each one you collect can later be cashed in for a roll on a loot table. They're one of the steadier ways your time in the mines turns into useful payouts.
Shards share the same eight rarity tiers as contraband, running from Simple up to Exceptional:
| Tier | Tier | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple | (lowest) | Legendary | |
| Uncommon | Godly | ||
| Elite | Divine | ||
| Ultimate | Exceptional | (highest) |
Earning shards
Shards drop while you mine. The base rate is low, so most of your income comes from stacking up the things that raise it:
- A Shard Booster raises your shard drop chance for its duration. See Boosters.
- The armour mining enchant Lodestone grants increased shard chance.
- Armour trims with a shard find line.
- The of the Prospector jewel stat.
- The Shard Chance base stat from pickaxe prestige, worth 15%–30% more shards.
- The Scholar outpost major, which grants 50% increased shards.
How they stack: armour trim shard find, Lodestone and the of the Prospector jewel all read increased, so they now sum into one additive pool and multiply your chance once, instead of each being its own multiplier. The prestige Shard Chance stat is worded more, so it stays a separate multiplier on top.
Lodestone is covered on the Enchants pages — together with a Shard Booster these meaningfully stack up your shard haul.
Cashing in shards
Each shard rolls from a per-rarity loot table when you redeem it — a higher-tier shard pulls from a richer pool. Expect a spread of contraband, Ancient Energy, enchanting materials, and money, with the rarer tiers reaching toward the more coveted pulls. The higher the rarity, the better what you're rolling on.
The Shard Satchel
The Shard Satchel hoards your shards into a single item instead of cluttering your inventory. It carries an energy bar showing how full it is, and you pull your shards back out with /extract. As of Season 2 a Shard Satchel (and the related Dust Satchel) no longer stacks — it's capped at a stack size of 1, so each one is its own distinct hoard.
On death, the satchel itself is always kept (no White Scroll needed), but the shards inside it spill out with the rest of your loot. An emptied satchel comes back to you on respawn.
Rift shards are different
Don't confuse mining shards with Rift shards. Rift shards are a separate currency tied to the Tartarus Rift's point and shard economy and are spent there. This page is only about the overworld mining shards you earn from breaking blocks.
Version history
v3.0.0
- Armour trim shard find, Lodestone and the of the Prospector jewel stat now pool additively with each other instead of multiplying.
- The Rune of the Prospector is gone with the rest of the rune system. Its effect now lives on the of the Prospector jewel.
- The Scholar outpost major now also grants 50% increased shards, moved up from its minor.
- Earthquake now drops shards, so it feeds your shard haul like any other break.
v2.0.0
- Rebalanced shard bag rewards — roughly a quarter as many Enchant Rerolls, and 1.5× more money per rarity tier.
- Shard Satchels and Dust Satchels no longer stack (capped at a stack size of 1).
- Fixed a Shard Satchel's energy bar not visually updating after
/extractuntil it was reopened.
