Thanatos

A skeletal warlord wreathed in cursed flame, Thanatos is a Hard fight — the second-toughest of the normal bosses, with only Hephaestus above him and the Uber bosses above them both. He fights in three phases, and the lower his health drops the faster and meaner he gets.

Summoning

  • Key: Thanatos' Idol, forged from 64 Essence of Thanatos. That essence drops from high-tier hunts (T5–T6 shades and wraiths). See Hunt Tiers & Boss Essence. The Idol is also sold in the Boss Shop for 10,000 Hunter Points.
  • Requirement: Community Fund tier III — one tier earlier than before, and the only gate there is. The old level and prestige requirements have been removed.
  • Summon him at his altar and enter the portal with your party. The full ritual is covered in Summoning a Boss.
  • His altar also takes Thanatos' Unpaid Toll, the separate Uber key that calls Uber Thanatos from Fund tier V.

The fight

Thanatos opens more of his kit the lower his health falls — flame that blooms across the floor, runes that arm and detonate, and tethers that bind the whole party while he turns untouchable. The shared rules — tethers, telegraphs, arena resets — are explained in Boss Fight Mechanics. Read his tells and the openings reveal themselves; that's all we'll spoil.

A couple of fair-play notes: he slowly regenerates if you leave him alone, can't be slowed, and can no longer be stun-locked by rapid fire. His abilities now bite through armour rather than being shredded down to a tickle, so the telegraphs are worth respecting even in endgame gear. In his final phase, deaths feed him — stay alive. If you do go down, you respawn at his altar.

Drops

All loot goes to the summoner. The table runs from common crafting fuel and consumables up through enchant orbs and boosters, the Wrath of Thanatos offhand line, and his signature trim — the Thanatos Trim, his rarest pull, with a chase jackpot on top. For how rare-drop announcements and pity work, see Boss Loot & Drop Announcements.

Killing him pays the summoner 4,000 Hunter Points. Chasing the trim? Track your odds on the RNG Meter.

Looking for a different challenge? Echidna is the gentler boss below him, Uber Thanatos the harder one above (the only source of The Everwrought), and the signature special items from each boss are worth comparing.

Version history

v3.0.0

  • Thanatos now unlocks at Community Fund tier III, one tier earlier than before, and the Level 100 / prestige requirement is gone.
  • His abilities no longer lose most of their damage to armour.
  • Dying to him now respawns you at his altar instead of at spawn.
  • The Calcite Charge Satchel in his table has been replaced with 3% Calcified Dust.
  • Added Uber Thanatos, summoned at the same altar with Thanatos' Unpaid Toll from Fund tier V.
  • Talos no longer takes a completion penalty on Thanatos. He is no longer harder for it to finish than the easier bosses.

v2.0.0

  • Thanatos now requires Level 100+ (or any prestige) to summon, replacing the old Hunter T5 gate.
  • Improved the colour-coding on his ground hazards so threats read more clearly.
  • His deadliest telegraphed attack now leaves a touch more time to react.
  • Fixed a rare case where Thanatos could unleash a late-fight attack the instant a new fight began.
  • Thanatos no longer drops Condensed Crude Ore or the Quantum Entangler.
  • He now slowly regenerates when left alone, can't be slowed, and can no longer be stun-locked by rapid fire (the Wrath of Thanatos offhand was also reworked into the Soul Rot combat offhand).
